Weymouth Beach Huts

Weymouth Beach Huts

Beach huts have their roots in nineteenth century bathing machines. Looking like beach huts on wheels, they could be hired for the half hour. Male bathing machines had to be kept a set distance from the female machines, but by the 1890s the call for mixed bathing was getting stronger. As it became more acceptable for people to walk across the beach in their bathing costumes, changing tents were erected and purpose-built day huts began to appear.
